From New York Times bestselling author Seanan McGuire, a haunting urban fantasy short story in the Carniepunk anthology—for fans of all things circus, supernatural, and mysterious…
It’s been seventeen years since the last time Ada’s carnival passed through her father’s hometown in Alabama—and no one is expecting the reception she gets.
Carniepunk Daughter of the Midway the Mermaid and the Open Lonely Sea edition by Seanan McGuire Literature Fiction eBooks
I consider myself to be a fan of Seanan McGuire as I purchase, read and enjoy almost everything that she writes. With this new short story from the Carniepunk anthology I am reminded of something: Ms. McGuire’s writing is lyrical and lovely. When reading the October Daye series, Velveteen’s books and Indexing, I find myself so lost in the intricate plot and character developments that I don’t take note of her actual writing style. This short story reminded me that the author has a way with a turn of phrase and a descriptive style that draws the reader into the story without beating a metaphor or simile to death. I enjoyed these lines enough to re-read them: “Autumns are harvesttime, and harvesttime is carnival time. Even the trees know it, and they dress themselves up in reds and yellows and kiss-a-carnie gold.”Daughter of the Midway is a short story that introduces to a “family” of carnie folk that travel to Alabama and find that the past has caught up with their main attraction and her daughter. It is a complete tale of transformation, choices and the shabby but genuine magic of the carnival.
I highly recommend this short but charming story.

Carniepunk Daughter of the Midway the Mermaid and the Open Lonely Sea edition by Seanan McGuire Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Seanan's short fiction always tends to leave me a little brokenhearted (in the best way) and this was no exception.
I read this in an anthology. I was both charmed and dismayed even in that select field of fearfully excellent writers. I bought the short story separately because I wanted to review it separately (and also it didn't cost that much; so, heh.). Ms. McGuire has the quality writing skills to strongly knit me to her main character in this story. Well done.
It was somewhat interesting to read but maybe because it's a shorter book it wasn't as fleshed out as her other fantastic books. I don't know if I would recommend this one.
Seanan McGuire always does fascinating things with ideas and concepts. The short story ended slightly abruptly, but the imagery was amazing. The unreliable narrator doesn't realize how much info she is missing until it's too late.
I love both the October Day and the Incryptid series by this author. This was a wonderful short story, reminiscent of Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes in its portrayal of a time in which the travelling carnivals impact local towns. McGuire has an impressive ability to integrate fantastical creatures into the ordinary.

Once again, Seanan McGuire creates a completely original world. In the not-too-distant future, a travelling carnival is an anachronism in a changing world. Well-developed characters and the strong voice of the female narrator offer us new ways to look at how humans act out traditions, at gender roles, and how we connect to those around us. A wonder-filled thoughtful, entertaining read. Ms. McGuire is on my short-list of authors to pre-order. I'll read anything she wants to write.
"Serendipity" is "the accidental discovery of something wonderful". I discovered Seanan McGuire through her pen name Mira Grant, and I discovered Mira Grant by accident, after purchasing her novel Feed, which I mistook for another novel of the same title.
Some writers are great... in one milieu, with one character, or in one story length. McGuire shines in short fiction as well as in novels (all writers know that shorter is harder), and can make us experience a world from behind the eyes of many different characters. The backgrounds, the plots, the narrative hook that captures your attention and reels you in - are all stellar. But the essence of these stories is always the people at their heart.
The person at the heart of this story is a girl traveling the carnie circuit with her family, and the upheaval caused by a couple of townies with very different idea about what is and what should be.
